Mattress Pad vs Mattress Topper: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to enhancing your bed’s comfort, the terms “mattress pad” and “mattress topper” are often used interchangeably. But they serve very different purposes. Understanding the distinction can help you make a smarter purchase—and get the sleep quality you deserve.

In this guide, we’ll compare mattress pads vs mattress toppers, covering their construction, benefits, and ideal use cases. Whether you need extra cushioning, temperature regulation, or mattress protection, we’ll help you decide which one is right for your sleep setup.

What Is a Mattress Pad?

A mattress pad is a thin, quilted layer that sits on top of your mattress, usually secured by elastic corners or a fitted sheet style. Its primary role is to protect your mattress from dust, spills, and wear while adding a slight boost in softness. Most mattress pads are less than 2 inches thick and are designed to be used with your existing fitted sheet.

Because of their slim profile, mattress pads are ideal for those who want a subtle change in feel without altering the support level of the mattress. They are also easier to wash and maintain than thicker toppers. Many pads feature a waterproof backing for extra protection—like the Mellanni 100% Waterproof Mattress Cover, which combines a soft cotton surface with a waterproof membrane to guard against accidents and allergens.

• Thin, quilted construction (typically under 2 inches)
• Primary function: mattress protection and minor comfort enhancement
• Often includes waterproof or hypoallergenic layers
• Easy to remove and machine washable

What Is a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper is a thicker layer—usually 2 to 4 inches—designed to significantly alter the feel of your mattress. It adds substantial cushioning, pressure relief, and can change the firmness level. Toppers are made from materials like memory foam, latex, or down, and they sit directly on top of the mattress, often secured with straps or a fitted cover.

If your mattress is too firm or you’re experiencing pressure points, a topper can provide dramatic comfort improvement. However, toppers are not typically waterproof or designed for spill protection. For those who want both comfort and protection, layering a mattress pad over a topper is a common strategy.

• Thick (2–4 inches) and made of foam, latex, or down
• Significantly changes mattress feel (softness, support, pressure relief)
• Not usually waterproof—focus is on comfort
• May require a separate cover for protection

• Thickness: Pad (<2 inches) vs Topper (2–4 inches)

Which One Should You Choose?

Your choice depends on your primary need. If you want to protect your mattress from spills, dust mites, and everyday wear while adding a hint of plushness, a mattress pad is the way to go. The Mellanni 100% Waterproof Mattress Cover is an excellent choice—it’s noiseless, breathable, and fully waterproof, making it perfect for households with kids or pets.

If your mattress is too firm, sagging, or causing discomfort, a mattress topper can transform your sleep surface. For example, pairing a plush topper with a high-quality sheet set like the Mellanni Iconic 4-Piece Microfiber Sheet Set can create a luxurious, hotel-like bed. The sheet set’s deep pockets and soft microfiber fabric will accommodate the added height of a topper while providing a smooth, cool surface.

• Choose a mattress pad for protection and minimal comfort boost.
• Choose a mattress topper for a significant change in feel and pressure relief.
• Consider using both: a topper for comfort and a pad on top for protection.

Can You Use Both a Mattress Pad and a Topper?

Absolutely! In fact, many sleep enthusiasts layer both to get the best of both worlds. Start with a mattress topper to adjust firmness and add cushioning. Then, place a waterproof mattress pad on top to protect your investment from spills, dust, and allergens. This layered approach is especially useful for guest beds or children’s rooms.

When layering, ensure your fitted sheet has deep enough pockets to accommodate the combined height. The Mellanni Iconic 6-Piece Extra Deep Microfiber Sheet Set is designed for mattresses up to 18 inches deep, making it a versatile option for layered setups.

• Topper provides comfort; pad provides protection.
• Use deep-pocket sheets to fit over both layers.
• Wash the pad regularly; spot-clean the topper as needed.
